International women’s day, rally participents jih womens wing mangalore

March 3, 2011

To mark the 101 International women’s day, a group of Women’s organizations C/o School of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya, held a rally from Jyothi circle to Town hall on Thursday 3rd March 2011.  The rally was formally inaugurated by the Mangalore City Corporator Mariamma Thomas and Shenaaz (Editor, Anupama) by freeing balloons in the air.

The women were vociferous in their demands and began the rally by shouting slogans like “stop abortion of female fetus.”

Later, addressing the participants, Mariamma Thomas said that today all women’s organizations have come under one banner to raise their voices to empower women in the society.  She said that women have to take our responsibilities to educate women in the society and to avoid abortion of female fetus. She also said that women are very dedicated in their work and now they are serving in various fields and taking care of their families.  When we meet in such programmes we have to share our problems and to find solutions to overcome them.  This is the first time in Mangalore’s history that all the women organizations have come together to raise their voices against the problems women face in the society.

Shanaaz also spoke on the occasion and said let our voices be the voices of liberation and transformation. Traditionally, women bear primary responsibility for the well-being of their families. Yet they are systematically denied access to the resources they need to fulfill their responsibility, which includes education, health care services, job training and access and freedom to use family planning services. We have to fight for our rights and we should fight with unity she said.
