Politicians Resort to Rituals, a Face Saving Stunt

June 23, 2011

The unpredictable political developments in our state have brought a rare incident in spotlight. That two of our leaders have indulged in an unusual attempt of “swearing” to prove their innocence over corruption charges. A date is also fixed. One says the other tried to buy his “silence” over graft charges but the later denies it as absolutely baseless allegation. Obviously the incident is yet another black spot in the history of Karnataka’s politics as one of them had held highest public office in Karnataka and the other is currently holding the same office are indulged in allegations and counter allegations bringing the issue to the streets. The comments of cautious citizens over the issue have rightly diverted the attention of many. Some say their act is absolutely far below the stature of an average statesman. Some have equated it to the inhuman business of throwing mud on each other.

We hope for an early update in view of the gravity of the challenges openly claimed through public and private means.

This particular incident poses some serious questions:

1)       Is this the right of way of proving one’s innocence? Is one’s swearing before his

deity will help prove one’s innocence?

2)       Does proving other wrong help one to be a man of higher caliber?

3)       What’s the fitting solution of corruption?

4)       Do we need a vibrant mechanism to ensure availability of responsible politicians and an effective system of accountability at all levels?

More over the alarmingly rising trends of corruption have irked the masses. A large section of the society is being deprived of the basic rights. The basic needs of the citizens are yet to be fulfilled; this aspect demands commitment of our leaders, but we failed to witness their tireless efforts. India desperately needs a solution.

The right attitude of a person depends largely on the beliefs he gets, the customs and traditions that he follows, and also the religious teachings that guide him in the ups and downs of life. If all these parameters are strengthened with a belief of oneness of God, His Power, Attributes and His Omnipresence, healthy attitudes of both individuals and societies will surely be within the reach then. Again, this firm belief instills love of God that help a person follow the path of serving the humanity. It’s the love of God that inculcates a sense of accountability before the God. And a passion for selfless service for the humanity:

Just think over the underlying issues. The entire row about corruption – be it within the state or at national level – pertains to the leaders and their responsibility towards the people. A leader’s involvement in corruption suggests his irresponsible behavior towards his job and service to the people. In spite of stringent laws the issue of corruption is ever growing.

It’s the belief in One Almighty God and a sense of accountability that helps a person love the entire humanity and serve it selflessly, without which the swearing is nothing but a lips service and the claims and challenges are nothing but a political gimmick. We need a healthy political culture that can lead our politicians from the influence of corrupt practices and make them true servant of the humanity.
