In a remarkable display of environmental activism and communal harmony, a diverse group of volunteers has launched an ambitious tree planting campaign in Shimoga, Karnataka. The initiative aims to revitalize a six-acre plot near the Women’s Polytechnic in E Block of Swami Vivekananda Layout, which had previously degenerated into an illegal dump site.

Key Points:

– 2,000 trees planned for planting

– Project to continue until October 2

– Multiple faith-based and environmental organizations involved

– Senior citizens actively participating alongside youth

The project, spearheaded by Bala Krishna of the Nirmala Tunga Campaign, has united environmentalists from various religious backgrounds. Organizations such as Jamaat-e-Islami Hind (JIH), Humanitarian Relief Society (HRS), Round Table, and Go Green have joined forces in this green initiative.

“This collaborative effort not only rejuvenates the land but also strengthens community bonds,” said Bala Krishna, when asked about the project’s impact.

The local JIH president, a senior citizen, has been notably active in the planting efforts. His participation has inspired younger volunteers, emphasizing the intergenerational nature of environmental stewardship.

An HRS volunteer commented, “Seeing people from different faiths working together for our environment is truly inspiring. It shows that nature conservation can transcend all boundaries.”

The site, once part of the Tunga Upper Bank Project channel, had become a dumping ground for construction debris, commercial waste, and even medical refuse. This transformation effort marks a significant step towards urban environmental restoration in Shimoga.

As the project continues, it stands as a model for interfaith cooperation in addressing environmental challenges, potentially paving the way for similar initiatives across the region.
