July 12, 2024

Udupi, 12th July 2024 – In a timely gathering addressing the pressing issue of communal harmony, Professor Mohammed Saleem Engineer, Vice President of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind (JIH), met with local social activists and political representatives in Udupi. The event, organized by JIH Udupi, underscored the critical importance of fostering unity and justice in an increasingly polarized society.

Dr. Mohammed Saad Belgami, State President of JIH Karnataka, set the tone by emphasizing India’s rich multicultural heritage and the current challenges to its unity. He highlighted positive initiatives such as the Sadhbhavana Manch and Dharmic Jan Morcha, which aim to promote peace and justice across communities.

Social activist Amruth Shenoy praised the enduring spirit of the Coastal Belt and emphasized the role of platforms like Sahabalve in raising awareness about communal harmony. Other speakers expressed concern over the growing polarization of youth in Udupi and Mangalore, and addressed troubling issues such as mob lynching and hate speech by politicians.

Professor Saleem Engineer, in his keynote address, called for introspection on the role of religious institutions in social and political spheres. Drawing from historical examples, he stressed the importance of truth and urged for greater coordination among people to combat divisive forces.

The dialogue identified three key areas for focused action: political engagement, social outreach, and media responsibility. Participants agreed that these sectors play crucial roles in either exacerbating or alleviating communal tensions.

This meeting serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need to discourage hate-mongering individuals and institutions while supporting those who promote peace and harmony. As communal tensions continue to simmer in various parts of the country, initiatives like this Udupi dialogue offer a beacon of hope.

The gathering concluded with a resolute call to action, urging all sectors of society to work towards promoting communal harmony and justice. As our nation faces these challenges, it is clear that the path forward lies in unity, understanding, and a shared commitment to India’s diverse and inclusive heritage.
