Social Reformation Through Girls’ Transformation: GIO Shows the Way

February 19, 2011

Girls Islamic Organization of Karnataka (GIO) is spearheading the cause of building a clean society through character building of women, specially addressing the issues faced by teenage girls. The GIO launched a weeklong statewide campaign today that will go on from February 21 to 27, 2011 under the theme “Teri Hayaath Hai Kirdaar-e-Mominahyour life is a reflection of a true believer”.

Addressing a press conference today sister Sadia Baseerath, GIO advisory council member, said, “In continuation with the series of efforts for reconstruction of the society, we are organizing a week long campaign organizing individual and collective meets, school and college lecturers, literature distribution, exclusive programmes for students and young girls, visit to hospitals, orphanages and old age homes.” Ms. Sadia said “Group discussions, essay competitions and quiz contests are planed on these topics.

1.       Exemplary Mominah in the light of Quran and Sunnah
2.       Excellent examples of ideal women
3.       Vibrant aspects of lady companions
4.       Students and young women in the field of Education and hard work
5.       Dreadful effects of western culture and our role.”

Addressing the press conference, GIO Karnataka President sister Madiha Afshan  said, “We want to reach out to women in general and female Muslim students in particular with Islamic teachings and show them the way to success in here and hereafter, this  is the basic objective of the GIO constitution. All this for the construction of a just society and a powerful nation through womenfolk who are disciplined, obedient and lead God-centered life. The Almighty Allah loves those who reflect such noble characters. Our criterion for success is not accumulating material surplus but attaining spiritual dominance with high morals. Those women are superior whose ethical state is admirable in all respects. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) expressed glad tidings of paradise for such women.   Allah loves His creatures, that is why He has bestowed us with countless material things and also the faculty of thought so we can thank Him by way of leading a life which is a reflection of a true Believer. We want to elucidate that to lead a life of Mominah means to follow the Will of Allah and purify themselves in the light of Quran and Sunnah. Then only girls can discharge the duties successfully in home, college, or office.”

Speaking on the problems faced by girls Ms. Madiha said, “In few place our sisters face problems in the use of Hijab (veil). But sisters overcome such obstacles with determination. In rare cases where there is more Satanic tendencies they are ready to change their place or college, but they never think of leaving Hijab. We are reaching out to schools, colleges, hostels, hospitals, and old age homes to know their concerns and to convey the soul-searching message—the only way out for their problems. We will have surveys and follow-up will be taken up by the local presidents of GIO. ”

Sister Farha Khalid, District Organizer-Bangalore, told the press conference. “We are reaching out to Muslim as well as non-Muslim girls with the moral message. Anyone (female) can participate in open Islamic quiz, symposia and such programmes. GIO is striving to inculcate the true concept of Islam among students and young women. We have strongly resolved to shape-up the moral aspects of young women to an extent that fulfills the purpose of their existence on the earth, which in turn helps them to reconstruct the society and make it an abode of peace, progress and harmony – Insha Allah.  We have a strong determination to convey the message of dignity to every young girl. Following the footsteps of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) we shall engage ourselves in this noble cause. We deem it as our prime responsibility to convey this lively message for which Allah has sent down our beloved Prophet (PBUH). Today’s society badly needs students of good manners who, with their vibrant presence in the campus make it an excellent learning centre. The society also needs such young women who can make their homes sweetest ones in real sense.”

Speaking on present day problems Ms. Farha said, “Certain issues need urgent attention. No doubt there are problems when girls live away from home in other cities. In metros like Bangalore and tier-2 cities there is a convergence of girls from many places of North India. They have different familial and social backgrounds. Their way of living and thinking surely is influencing our sisters in the campuses and in the corporate sector, more so in the IT industry. Off course many problems are region/city specific and we are tackling it accordingly. The main thrust of GIO is character building of girls and educating them on their responsibility in the society, and creating awareness of negative and positive repercussions when they venture out for education or work.”

She added, “Our goal is be to:

  • Become comfort for our parents
  • Provide serenity to the home we live
  • Occupy a respectable place in our brothers’ heart and
  • Be a mercy to the family and society.
  • Make our campus a place of recognition.
  • Nourish noble characters in our friends and instill in their hearts a strong passion to serve the country and its citizens.
  • Have true affection and love for our teachers.
